Don’t use coconut oil if you have thin hair

“Oil just adds shine, it won’t actually make anything better,” Lily Yip, master stylist at Mizu Salon, tells. “Silicones and oils just become a coating on top of hair, so it’s very difficult to remove. Eventually, it weighs down your hair and you get tons of buildup and it actually makes your hair look thinner.”

Steer clear of shampoos with ammonium lauryl sulfate or sodium lauryl sulfate

“People with thin hair need to avoid detergents, polymers, proteins, damaging alcohols, and ammonia that is found in traditional shampoos in the form of ammonium lauryl sulfate or sodium lauryl sulfate.

These ingredients are added to make the shampoo feel thicker and richer in your hand, and also to create the foaming lather people have come to expect,” Chaz Dean, creator of WEN Hair Care, tells us”.The reality is that these same ingredients are incredibly harsh and drying to your hair and scalp.”

Take major precautions against over-drying your hair

Vidal Sassoon Global Ambassador, Duffy, tells, “Over-stretching or straightening the hair shaft whilst drying it will take all the elasticity and natural volume out of your hair. Be gentle with it and don’t over-dry it, especially if using a round brush.”

Don’t overdo your hair color

Many women actually feel more texture in their hair once it’s colored, but you need to be careful not to overdo bleach. Processing your hair too often, to the point of being fried, can seriously thin out your hair. Go as long as you can between appointments, and ask your colorist not to pull the color through every time.

And say good-bye to the super long hair

“Medium to short haircut lengths are best for fine hair. The longer the hair gets the more it weighs itself down, resulting in even thinner, stringy looking hair,”Jen Atkin, celebrity hairstylist to Khloe Kardashian and Jessica Alba, tells us.

If you have naturally curly or wavy hair, embrace the texture

“Girls with fine but curly hair need to work with their natural texture. If you blow dry and straighten your hair it will damage your hair and make it look more fine! If you have curly fine hair, take advantage of the beautiful texture and work more volume into it,” Kylee Heath, celebrity hairstylist to Sofia Vergara, tells us.

Up your braid thickness with the pancaking technique

Once you’re done braiding your hair, gently pull out each loop on one side, but just pull a pinch with your fingertips. The best part? You can do this on basically every braid ever.

Mousse will give you instant thickness. Here’s the right way to apply the product

First of all, your hair needs to be damp. Spray about a golf ball-size amount of mousse into your palm. Then, take a comb and gently run it over the mousse to get a little bit of product on the bristles. Comb through from the mid-lengths to the ends and continue around your entire head until it’s evenly distributed. This way, you won’t get that annoying crunchy feeling from too much product!

Choose a style without a defined part

Kylee Health says, “Try looks without a defined part. Sometimes a part with fine hair can expose a lot of scalp, so choose styles that don’t need a part instead.”

Or, flip your part and style your hair on the opposite side from where your part usually falls

When you part your hair the same way every day for years, the hair becomes trained to lay flat on that side. Flip your part to the opposite side. Spritz with some texture spray at the root to get that voluminous flip going and BAM: volume!

Use colored hair powder

Dry shampoo is great for blondes, but for brown and black hair, using a colored hair powder does wonders. “Get some texture at the roots for volume and hide any excess scalp that you don’t want to see with Bumble and Bumble hair powder,” Heath says.

While you’re getting ready to go out, use just two or three velcro rollers at the crown of your head

Do this when your hair’s already dry. Use a dry texture spray and put the rollers at the top triangle of your head. If you want even more volume, blow warm air on the rollers for about 30 seconds, then let them cool for about 10 minutes and take out the rollers.

Use dry shampoo at night, not in the morning

“Put dry shampoo or baby powder in your hair at night. Tossing and turning on your pillow will help the product absorb oil and give you volume at the same time,” Judy McGuinness, senior stylist at Mizu Salon, tells us . You’ll actually wake up with hair that’s thicker.

Ask for layers

Long hair that’s one length won’t do anything for you in terms of making hair look thicker, but layers will give you volume and movement at once.
